White Men Can Jump?

June 24, 2011

My regular Thursday night fitness with my brother was last night. We played some basketball.

I was still a bit sore from a new exercise routine at the gym the previous night. I had to work out some more though. Got to get fit. Hoo-haa!

We played a game of one-on-one.

We haven’t played one-on-one since we were in our teenage years and we had a basket in our driveway.

Holy shit did we work up a sweat last night or what!

But the answer to the title question of this post is no. At least us two white men. We can’t jump. The basket in the nearby school yard where we played was pretty low yet no rim was touched.

Oh well. We had a good time and got a good workout doing it.

And now for today’s Faggot of the Day.

Toronto hosts an annual gay pride parade. It is the crown jewel of Toronto’s Pride week, a festival of sorts that runs a whole week. Basically, it’s a week of parties.

It is my understanding that previous generations of Torontonians were prejudice towards the gay community (gays, lesbians, transgender, etc.) The parade began as more along the lines of a protest and march for equality and whatever the heck minority groups are always fighting for.

There was a time when the gay community was marginalized. I don’t think that’s still true in Toronto. It’s my understanding that gay or straight, people are all equal. But existing in that community, and existing in the community of Toronto as a whole, are a group of people who want to bully other people on behalf of the gay community. Bullying not for equality, but for preferential treatment.

The current mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, has been invited to participate in the parade. He declined because he’d prefer to spend the Canada Day long weekend at his cottage with his family as he has the previous thirty years. Now cries of the mayor being intolerant to the gay community have been heard.

Declining an invitation isn’t intolerance. Declining their right to have the parade is intolerant. The Mayor has said that the city will help fund the parade as long as the parade does not include any racially insensitive participants (specifically Queers Against Israeli Apartheid).

It feels like the community, or at least the people claiming to represent the community are demanding preferential treatment. That’s not tolerance, that’s not equality; preferential treatment is the marginalization of everybody but one.

To the people calling Mayor Ford a bigot because he’s tolerant to everybody, because he wants to spend a national holiday with his family in a traditional manner, congrats! You have been awarded the “bundle of sticks used for fuel” of the day!

I totally suck at basket ball. Only ever scored once in a game, a long shot that just sailed through the hoop. I was totally shocked, but never managed it again.

Quite agree with your faggot of the day. Maybe there should be Straight Pride marches too?

Or maybe people should just stay inside and mind their own business

I agree with you. The mayor has every right to vacation with his family. He’s already committed funds to support the parade. That’s good enough.

Some people want their cake and eat it too, I guess.

People are upset about Peter Griffin…errr…Mr. Ford not attending the parade specifically but I believe there is a whole week of festivities and thus far he’s not planning on attending any. I’m not saying he’s a bigot, but he sure is an idiot! Pride brings in like a million people to the city, he should go to his cottage and spend time with his family AND attend the parade. Huntsville is like 4 hours from TO, he can go to the cottage, Fri and Sat and head back on Sunday for a few hours.

It may be idiotic of him to attend the parade. He may be welcomed in the parade even though he was invited. There are specific people in that community who have schemed to undermine his campaign for mayor.

There’s still quite a lot of anti-gay sentiment in the U.S., as least as far as the laws are concerned. But “ditch your vaca to come to my parade” is a fourth-grade response.

Pretty sure that anti-gay is a minority now in Toronto. Other parts of the world is different. But Toronto, according to their board of tourism is “Gay as it gets.”

Glad you had fun with your brother. :) You’ve been really dedicated to your workout routines. I’m impressed! Making changes like that isn’t an easy thing but you’ve done really well.

    I’m trying.
