Das Food

July 22, 2013

Saturday night, I ate the funnest sounding food ever.

Wiener schnitzel.

There are no foods that sound more fun than wiener schnitzel.

Some back tracking now. I saw a restaurant featured on Food Network Canada’s You Gotta Eat Here. A Toronto restaurant called The Musket.

I tracked the place down to an industrial area in the west end. The restaurant is between an auto mechanic shop and a bread factory. Not a bakey, a factory. A big place that bakes loaves of bread to be sold in grocery stores all over the place. (Bee tea dub, the place has a little shop in front that sells fresh baked goodies. You know when you go to the grocery store and you’re looking over bread for the one with the latest expiry date. Baked earlier that day. Still warm. You cannot beat that freshness. Best light rye bread I’ve ever eaten.)

The Musket has the feel of a Canadian basement circa 1972. Wood panels on the walls, odd things turned into mirrors, your grandparents’ basement chairs. This place has not been updated since forever.

The place, although old, was clean, maintained, well-serviced, friendly service, prices good, food good. I’m good.

The TV told me to eat there. So I ate there. Now I’m saying to you, you gotta eat there. Not only was the food good, it was also fun to say. Wiener schnitzel. Seriously, best name for a food, ever.

We have a wiener schnitzel place out in Pickering. It also has the whole 70s basement theme.

    But no good pizza place…

There used to be a hot dog chain by that name where I grew up. We got ENDLESS giggles from it.

A hot dog chain? Does the market require a chain for hot dogs?

I should keep this in mind next time I’m looking for a new place to try.

Oddly enough, I had some good schnitzel on Friday. I went to a little place in my hood called “Bread and Butter” which boasts the city’s best schnitzel. I had the chicken and it was pretty darned good. They also have weiner (bahahaha) too.

I think you’ve mentioned that place to me before. Maybe I should venture into your hood. Provided I’m allowed in.

Isn’t it Uncle Betty’s that I’m always telling you to go to???

Yes you’ve recommended uncle Betty’s a few times but bread n butter sounds familiar and you’re the only person I know who would have mentioned a place like that over there to me.

    How old are you?

Old enough to appreciate good humour.

The hot dog place where Dane and I grew up was called Der Weinerschnitzel. They had some good hot dogs, too. :) Not sure if they’re still around, though. The good ones always seem to go under first, for some reason.
